The US State Department congratulated the Iraqi government on fulfilling its promise to hold early elections.
The US State Department spokesman said in his daily press conference, Tuesday, in response to a question by Al-Hurra: "We are pleased to conduct the elections in a peaceful manner."
"We have seen the preliminary results announced by the High Elections Committee, and we are waiting for the final, approved results, and we will keep judgment on them until then," he added.
Price pointed out that the elections included hundreds of international observers from the United Nations and the European Union, and thousands of domestic observers.
He said, "We hope that when the final results of the elections are approved, the members of the new council will form a government that reflects the will of the Iraqi people, and can work to address the security and economic challenges in Iraq."
"We look forward to working with the new government when it is formed," he concluded.
Sunday's elections were called ahead of their scheduled date in 2022, with the aim of calming the anger of the street after the popular uprising that erupted in the fall of 2019. But the uprising was met with a bloody repression, which resulted in the killing of about 600 people and the injury of more than 30,000.
