    An informed source confirmed today, Tuesday (January 2, 2024), that Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani’s plan succeeded in paralyzing the drug mafias across the roads of Diyala Governorate.
    The source said in an interview with "Baghdad Today", "The security plan to enforce the law in Diyala, which was launched by Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani in March 2023 to combat terrorism, organized crime and smuggling, especially medicines, succeeded in achieving important results in paralyzing the movement of drug smuggling mafias." Through 3 main roads, the most prominent of which is Kirkuk-Baghdad.
    He added, "The mafias have been shown to be running a trade worth billions and are financing 11 governorates with medicines, some of which are from unlicensed sources and others are not fit for consumption," pointing out that "the medicine file is dangerous and sensitive, and there are parties, which he did not name, involved in it."
    Meanwhile, Diyala Health Media Director Fares Al-Azzawi acknowledged that “security ambushes thwarted the entry of 21 medicine shipments into Diyala via the Kirkuk-Baghdad road, most of which included medicines of unknown origin,” stressing  that “all medicines were confiscated while investigations are continuing with the detainees.”
    Earlier in the year 2023, the head of the Iraqi Pharmacists Syndicate, Mustafa Al-Hiti, said: “In 2019, in agreement with the Prime Minister at the time, we proposed setting the price of the dollar and called it (the pharmaceutical dollar) at an amount less than the normal exchange rate by 23 percent, in an effort to control the price of medicine.” On the market. The proposal was presented to the Ministries of Health and Finance, but nothing was achieved, and it seems that the pharmaceutical policy at that stage wanted the situation to remain as it was.”
    Al-Hiti asserts that “the state will not cost more than three billion dollars to provide a safe and effective medicine at an acceptable price for the citizen,” adding, “But there are ramifications to this issue and it is difficult for the state to control them, such as border crossings, even through the use of the army and police, as the issue is complex.”
    According to Al-Hiti, within one year, the Pharmacists Syndicate carried out 14,000 inspection visits to pharmacies in Baghdad alone, and the Syndicate tightens penalties on violators, such as closing the pharmacy for three days to a week, a month, or even 90 days, depending on the type of violation.
    He added, "We need cooperation between the Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraq and the central government regarding the introduction and control of medicines, and to consider the border crossing in Kurdistan as an official port, and for the latter to coordinate with Baghdad the process of examining the medicine. Until now, the Iraqi Ministry of Health does not acknowledge the examination of some medicines by Kurdistan committees."
    The head of the Pharmacists Syndicate explains that “the official medicine that has passed the examination process, whose tax value has been paid, and is promoted in advertising media, will have a higher price than smuggled medicines of unknown origin.”
    The issue of health and security control over materials entering Iraq is one of the major problems, as its neglect in previous years caused large quantities of unusable medical materials to enter the country, which posed major health risks to citizens, according to observers.
