    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Today, Sunday (January 7, 2024), Member of Parliament Mudar Al-Karawi identified 3 reasons for the decline in Turkey’s exports to Iraq during the year ending 2023.
Al-Karawi said in an interview with “Baghdad Today” that “the volume of trade exchange between Ankara and Baghdad ranges between 15-18 billion dollars annually, and it varies, that is, it rises and falls according to proportions that are not large,” pointing out that “Turkey and Iran constitute a large portion of imports.” Baghdad, especially for foodstuffs and other goods.”
He added, "The volume of exchange between Baghdad and Ankara is affected by three reasons: the effect of the rise and fall of the dollar and the extent to which the markets need the goods and whether they are suitable for them, in addition to companies moving their goods according to which market brings them greater financial benefit, not to mention the price competition for those products."
He pointed out that "the current events in the region as a whole are affecting production methods and chains, but not at a dangerous level because the events are still within the scope of containment and not a comprehensive clash," indicating that "the lower the dollar exchange rate, the more flexible it will be for traders and companies to deal with imports and reduce prices in the country." markets and thus the purchasing mechanism is greater.”
He continued, "Ankara remains a major trading partner for Iraq, and the limited decline does not reflect the existence of a strategy to move the trade compass towards another country, but rather it is the product of economic activity."
Iraq's imports from Turkey during the first 11 months of 2023 amounted to more than 11.5 billion dollars, a decrease of 9% from the same period in 2022, which then amounted to 12.6 billion dollars.
