[size=45]The House of Representatives is awaiting the decision of the Federal Court to decide on the lawsuits submitted regarding the previous “selection session of the Speaker of Parliament,” while representatives are likely to resolve the issue of choosing Al-Halbousi’s replacement during the next week.[/size]
[size=45]“Parliament is supposed to resume its regular parliamentary sessions on Saturday (January 27, 2024),” according to a statement by the Media Department of the House of Representatives, but it did not address the issue of choosing the new Speaker of Parliament.[/size]
[size=45]Member of the House of Representatives and representative of the Al-Fatah Alliance, Moeen Al-Kadhimi, says, “The issue of choosing a new speaker of the House of Representatives is linked to the opinion of the Federal Court regarding the complaint submitted by the Taqadum Party regarding the legitimacy of the previous parliament session.”[/size]

[size=45]The member of the House of Representatives expressed his “hope that alternative candidates will be chosen by the Sunni component to head Parliament,” noting that “the coordination framework held a meeting last Monday evening, and is still conducting negotiations and agreements regarding the specifications of a suitable candidate.”[/size]
[size=45]Al-Kadhimi pointed out, “The candidate for the presidency of the House of Representatives must be accepted by the majority of the Sunni component,” suggesting that “the issue of electing the new Speaker of the House of Representatives will be resolved within the next week.”[/size]
[size=45]For his part, another member of the House of Representatives, Salem Al-Anbuki, said in an interview with Al-Mada: “The Presidency of Parliament has not yet set a date for a new session to choose the Speaker of the House of Representatives.” He added, “The fate of the new session to choose the Speaker of the House of Representatives depends on the decision of the Federal Court regarding the legality of the previous session.”[/size]

[size=45]On Sunday (January 14, 2024), the Federal Supreme Court received a lawsuit demanding the invalidation of Al-Karim’s nomination for the presidency of Parliament. The lawsuit was filed by MPs Yousef Al-Kalabi and Faleh Al-Khazali from the “coordination framework.” The lawsuit included a request to issue a state order to stop the election session until the lawsuit is resolved.[/size]
[size=45]As a result, the “Taqaddum” Party responded by filing a complaint before the same Federal Supreme Court. The party’s representative, Haibat Al-Halbousi, raised what he said were “violations and irregularities” that occurred by the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Mohsen Al-Mandulai, during the House of Representatives session, last Saturday. The Integrity Commission also received requests to open an investigation into the issue of members of Parliament receiving sums of money (bribes) in exchange for electing a candidate.[/size]
[size=45]Parliament has previously failed, twice during the last period, to hold a session to elect a new president, due to failure to achieve a quorum. In the first session on Saturday, Al-Karim led with 152 votes, followed by Representative Salem Al-Issawi, the Sovereignty Alliance candidate, with 97 votes, and then Al-Azm Alliance candidate, Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani, with 48 votes, noting that the winner of the presidency of Parliament must obtain an absolute majority, that is, more than 165 representatives out of 329. .[/size]
