The crisis of choosing the parliament speaker.. Will political tensions impose “Al-Mashhadani” on “Al-Halbousi”?

The Iraqi political arena is witnessing the continuation of the crisis of electing the Speaker of Parliament, as this dilemma has become closely linked to the recent events and tensions witnessed by the country.
Under these complex circumstances, it seems that the leader of the Progress Party has no choice but to support Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani.
This step comes at a time when parliament is suffering from severe divisions, which increases the challenges facing the political process in Iraq, and fears are growing that these developments will affect the political and security stability in the country, which raises questions about the future of Iraq under these circumstances.
Former MP, Ayoub Al-Rubaie, confirmed that “the decision on the presidency of the House of Representatives has been postponed until further notice in the midst of recent events.”
Al-Rubaie explained that “the Middle East region is facing a dangerous slide, especially with the recent developments on the Lebanese front and the attempts of the occupying entity to launch a large-scale attack.”
He added, “The pace of airstrikes and the thousands of martyrs in Palestine and Lebanon are all worrying files that have prompted the political elites to direct their compass towards them, especially since these files are putting great pressure on the Iraqi scene,” adding that “resolving the issue of the presidency of the House of Representatives has been postponed until further notice due to recent events, especially since the Iraqi elites are watching with great concern the developments of what is happening, due to its major repercussions in all the countries of the Middle East.”
He stressed that "horrific attacks and massacres occur daily without any intervention by international organizations, especially the UN Security Council, noting that Washington unfortunately justifies what is happening, which represents another act of hypocrisy towards thousands of martyrs and wounded."
He added, "Iraq is facing serious challenges, and what is happening in Lebanon is pivotal and important, stressing that many files have been postponed due to the current events in Lebanon."
It is noteworthy that the occupying forces have been violently bombing Lebanese cities and towns for days, which has led to the deaths of thousands of martyrs and wounded and the destruction of vast areas.
For his part, independent politician Salah Al-Kubaisi confirmed that the door to candidacy for the presidency of the House of Representatives had been closed, explaining that “Al-Halbousi had no choice but to support Al-Mashhadani for the position of president after his presidential candidate abandoned the Progress Party.”
Al-Kubaisi said, “The Federal Supreme Court, in addition to the Coordination Framework, has more than 180 seats and has the upper hand within the House of Representatives. They have a clear refusal to open the door to candidacy again for the presidency of the House of Representatives.”
He added, "The dismissed Parliament Speaker, Mohammed al-Halbousi, does not have any candidate for the Parliament Speakership, but rather went towards supporting Mahmoud al-Mashhadani for the presidential position in the past period, reluctantly, after his only candidate, Shaalan al-Karim, abandoned the Progress Party."
He added, "Al-Halbousi has no other choice but to support Al-Mashhadani or boycott the wishes of the representatives," noting that "the choice to decide the presidency of parliament may be left to the representatives after the leaders of the blocs failed to find a unified opinion about one of the candidates for the position."
On November 14, 2023, the Federal Supreme Court, “the highest judicial authority in Iraq,” decided to terminate the membership of Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi, following a lawsuit filed against him by MP Laith al-Dulaimi, in which he accused him of forging his (al-Dulaimi’s) resignation from the House of Representatives. As a result, the Federal Court ruled to terminate their membership (al-Halbousi and al-Dulaimi).
On November 21, 2023, the Iraqi Parliament decided to officially terminate the membership of Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi.
