Baghdad/Al-Masala Al-Hadath: In a new development regarding the Khor Abdullah case, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the State of Kuwait announced their alliance to defend the agreement regulating the exploitation of Gulf waters, expressing their rejection of the decision of the Federal Supreme Court in Iraq to invalidate the agreement.
Saudi Arabia and Kuwait called on Iraq to adhere to previous agreements, while the latter stressed the importance of international arbitration to resolve disputes. In the same context, Iraqi parties reject the Khor Abdullah agreement, which has raised a state of tension in tripartite relations.
In this context, Iraqi representatives expressed their dissatisfaction with the agreement and considered it a step that violates the Iraqi constitution, stressing that it constitutes a threat to national sovereignty.
The tripartite conflict between Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait over Khor Abdullah is clearly visible, and these disputes come in light of escalating tensions and the failure to reach consensus on the management of this strategic resource.
Iraq's adoption of the Federal Supreme Court's decision to invalidate the Khor Abdullah Agreement indicates the escalation of the conflict between the parties, and opens the door to more political challenges in the region.
There are intense efforts made by Kuwait and Saudi Arabia to defend the agreement, while Iraqi pressure is accelerating through attempts to settle the conflict and provide proposed solutions.
Determining the fate of Khor Abdullah may be the focus of attention of the international community, as some wonder about the role of international mediation and international law in resolving this conflict.
Iraqi opinion expresses deep concern about the ultimate purpose of the Khor Abdullah Agreement, as it indicates the possibility of it being used to strangle Iraq by water and turn it into a semi-closed land state, which raises questions about the strategic goals and potential economic and security impacts.
The Iraqi representatives’ rejection of the Khor Abdullah Agreement, considering it invalid and violating the Iraqi Constitution, shows that it did not obtain a three-member majority of the House of Representatives. This rejection highlights the political and legal tension surrounding the agreement and reinforces requests to deposit a decision on its invalidity with the Security Council and the United Nations.
Some Iraqi parties point out the need to search for solutions acceptable to all, including the idea of establishing a joint port between Iraq and Kuwait, as an alternative to the current agreement. This reflects genuine attempts to resolve the conflict peacefully and flexibly.
The gathering of signatures by Iraqi representatives and their demand that the decision to invalidate the agreement be deposited with the Security Council reflects an escalation of the situation, with the threat of interrogation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs if the decision is not deposited with the United Nations as soon as possible.
Some accusations are directed towards the Iraqi Foreign Minister, as he is accused of obstructing the deposit of a copy of the Federal Supreme Court decision with the United Nations, which reflects the tension within the Iraqi government and the escalation of internal divisions.
The statements of the expert on border demarcation, Jamal Al-Halbousi, indicate that the Kuwaiti-Saudi statement regarding Khor Abdullah is considered unfair. This shows that the experts’ point of view is towards rejecting the bilateral statement issued by Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
