[size=52]The Federal Court postpones consideration of amending the Kurdistan Parliament elections law[/size]

[size=45]The session of the Iraqi Federal Supreme Court to take a decision in a lawsuit filed against amending the Kurdistan Parliament elections law was postponed until (February 11, 2024), and the Director of the Legal Department in the Kurdistan Parliament says that the list of voters is the reason for the postponement.[/size]
[size=45]Yesterday, Sunday (February 4, 2024), the Federal Court was scheduled to issue its final decision in a lawsuit that was initially two lawsuits against amending the Kurdistan Parliament Elections Law No. 1 of 1992, and they were merged into one lawsuit. In a press statement, the Director of the Legal Department in the Kurdistan Parliament said , Shermin Khader: “The president of the court decided to invite the High Elections Commission again and asked it to prepare a list and table of voters in the Kurdistan region, distribute them according to the governorates, and hand it over to the court to take its decision on it.” The case in question bears the number (83/1/2023) filed by the head of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan bloc in the fifth session of the Kurdistan Parliament, Ziyad Jabbar, and the head of the Al-Rafidain bloc in the Sulaymaniyah Provincial Council, Aman Najib Chamoun, in which they claim that Articles (1, 9, 15, 22, 36) of the Kurdistan Parliament Elections Law.[/size]
[size=45]Eight sessions have been held so far to consider this case, which is related to the number of members of Parliament, the number of quota seats, the voter registry, and electoral districts.[/size]
[size=45]According to officials in the Iraqi Elections Commission, the lawsuit is one of the reasons hindering their procedures related to the elections and the Commission’s agenda.[/size]
[size=45]The articles of the Election Law affected by the lawsuit are:[/size]
[size=45]Article 1: The Parliament of Iraqi Kurdistan consists of 111 members.[/size]
[size=45]Article 9: The Iraqi Kurdistan region is considered a single polling area and is divided into a number of polling stations.[/size]
[size=45]Article 15: For the Kurdistan Region, voters’ registers for voting are prepared according to electoral districts, and are arranged according to the letters of the alphabet in which their profession, address, date and place of birth are recorded. If this is not possible, the Higher Authority will find another way to achieve the necessary goals.[/size]
[size=45]Article 22: Any political party in the Iraqi Kurdistan region has the right to make a special list with the name of its candidates at the level of the Iraqi Kurdistan region, with a percentage of women not less than (30%), and the names of the candidates are in regular order to ensure that the mentioned percentage of women are represented in Parliament, provided that the number of representatives in each is not less than An electoral list of (3) candidates. The list of candidates shall be submitted to the President of the High Commission within 15 days from the date of announcing the election period, and all documents required in Article 21 shall be submitted to them.[/size]

[size=45]1- Five seats are allocated to Chaldean, Syriac and Assyrian candidates.[/size]
[size=45]2- Five seats are allocated to Turkmen candidates.[/size]
