    Economy News - Baghdad
An official Iraqi delegation headed by the Minister of Water Resources will soon visit Iran, Syria and Turkey, to discuss the water issue with them, while the country’s losses from the Euphrates River water in two years have reached ten billion cubic metres.
Iraq's total annual water consumption rate for all needs is about 70 billion cubic meters.
Minister Aoun Dhiab Abdullah said, “An official ethnic delegation headed by him will soon visit the Islamic Republic of Iran, to reach understandings regarding the water file. The delegation will also visit Syria and then Turkey.”
He added, "His latest visit will take place against the backdrop of limited imports coming from Turkey to the Syrian Tabqa Dam, and therefore he needs to release sustainable quantities to Iraq, especially in the months of July, August, and September, which are among the critical months due to high temperatures and increased evaporation rates."
He stated that “the imports coming from Syria via the Euphrates River for two years until now are 180 m3/s, while the agreement concluded between the two countries stipulates that they should not be less than 290 m3/s,” estimating Iraq’s loss of water over the two years at ten billion m3, which he called To demand compensation for his loss of water, in addition to releasing water quotas in accordance with the concluded agreement.
Abdullah continued, “Syria is currently working to build water storage as a result of heavy rain and snow falling on the Tabqa Dam basin, which led to a decrease in imports to Iraq, while releases from Turkey to Iraq have doubled to currently reach 750 m3/s, due to the latter’s generation of electrical energy.” From its dams.”
