    Today, Saturday (March 9, 2024), independent Kurdish politician Saber Ismail spoke about the chances of the emerging and independent Kurdish forces in the Kurdistan Parliament elections .
    Ismail said in an interview with "Baghdad Today", "The recent Federal Court decision, which divided the region into four electoral districts, is in the interest of the new parties and independent movements."
    Ismail added, "The new law allows every candidate to compete within his electoral district," pointing out that "independents must unite among themselves and not divide in order to be able to obtain the electoral quota and compete with traditional parties."
    He pointed out that “the emergence of independent movements with more than one alliance weakens their chances and disperses votes, and thus gives the traditional parties an opportunity to rise again and win the largest number of seats . ”
    On Sunday (March 3, 2024), the President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, signed a regional order setting the date for holding elections for the next session of the Kurdistan Parliament.
    The Presidency of the Region said in a statement received by “Baghdad Today” that “pursuant to the order and based on Paragraph (Second) of Article (First) of the Kurdistan Region Presidency Law No. (1) of 2005 as amended, President Nechirvan Barzani decided to set (June 10, 2024) as the date For the general elections of the sixth session of the Kurdistan Parliament.
    The statement added, "According to the regional order, all concerned parties are obligated to perform and accomplish what is necessary in order to cooperate and coordinate with the Independent High Electoral Commission for the purpose of implementing this order, which will be effective as of this day, which is the day of its issuance."
    On February 21, 2024, the Federal Supreme Court issued decisions regarding the Kurdistan Parliament elections law, and also decided to dissolve the High Commission for Elections and Referendums in the region.
    The court also reduced the number of members of the Kurdistan Parliament to 100 members instead of 111 members. It also dissolved the Region’s Election Commission and replaced it with the Election Commission to manage the Kurdistan Region’s elections, provided that the Kurdistan Region is divided “into four regions” to hold the expected legislative elections for the Kurdistan Parliament.
    The Federal Court said that its decisions “were issued unanimously by the members of the court, and that they are final and binding on everyone.”
    Under the quota system, 11 seats are allocated to the components, with five seats for Turkmen, five seats for Chaldean, Syriac, and Assyrian Christians, and one seat for Armenians.
    More than one local entity in the region, which submitted an objection to the Federal Court, claims that there is a defect in the electoral law currently in effect, represented by “the failure to fairly distribute quota seats to the governorates of Sulaymaniyah, Dohuk, and Erbil.”
    For their part, the aforementioned components do not want to change the electoral law because they benefit from the current method of distributing their components’ seats in Parliament.
