Shafaq News/ A member of the Kirkuk Provincial Council from the Kurdistan Democratic Party announced on Saturday that negotiations to form the local government have been stalled since the last meeting with Federal Prime Minister Muhammad al-Sudani, expecting the matter to be resolved after the latter’s return from Washington.
Hassan Majeed told Shafaq News Agency, “The meetings to form the Kirkuk Governorate administration and hold a council meeting have been suspended since the second meeting of the blocs participating in the meetings of Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani,” pointing out that “the remaining time suggests that holding a new session for the political blocs that won membership in the Governorate Council.” Kirkuk will be after the Iraqi Prime Minister returns from his visit to Washington. In addition, this week coincides with the end of the month of Ramadan and the Eid al-Fitr holiday, which means the third meeting will take place after this period.”
A member of the Kirkuk Provincial Council pointed out that “the delay in forming the governorate administration harms the interests of the governorate’s components in terms of projects, services, budget, and distribution of projects according to sectors and their needs.”
On February 22, Al-Sudani agreed with the political forces in Kirkuk to form a unified management coalition that includes the forces that won the last elections, which paves the way for the formation of the local government, while the coalition will remain under the presidency of Al-Sudani until the file is resolved.
The Sudanese is scheduled to pay an official visit, headed by a high-ranking government delegation, to Washington in the middle of this month, at the invitation of US President Joe Biden.
