The markets of the city of Baqubah recorded an unprecedented rise in clothing prices with the approach of Eid al-Fitr, which caused a decline in purchasing activity, especially by those with limited income.
The prices of summer clothes have doubled this season, compared to the past two years, according to shoppers.
Citizen Ahmed Jassim says, “The price of one shirt of good quality used to not exceed 25-30 thousand dinars, but the cheapest shirt today is priced at 38, 40, and 45 thousand dinars, and the pants were also priced at 25-35 thousand dinars, and today they are priced at 40-50-70 thousand dinars, according to “His quality.”
He added, "The cost of a young man's Eid kit, for example, was 100,000 dinars, which consists of a shirt or T-shirt, pants, shoes, and a belt, but today 100,000 dinars is not enough to buy two pieces of clothing."
In turn, citizen Hassan Al-Qaisi confirmed, “Salaries have become no longer able to withstand the high prices and are not enough for two weeks, as prices continue to rise gradually, but salaries are the same and their value is dissipating day after day. That is why we have bought only simple and necessary things this season to bring the joy of Eid into the hearts of our children and families.”
During his speech, Al-Qaisi called on the government to “find solutions that contribute to controlling prices, adjusting their rhythm, or increasing salaries to save citizens from high prices.”
In a related context, Abdul Rahman Al-Jumaili, the owner of a clothing store in Baqubah, said, “The high prices are not borne by the shop owners, but rather by the government and its procedures and the weak control over merchants. Today, the market is witnessing citizens roaming without purchasing, as most of them decline from buying and leave the stores after being shocked by the prices.”
Al-Jumaili stressed, “The reason for the high prices is the rise in the value of goods globally from their origin, especially Turkey, in addition to the rise in the price of the dollar and the high prices of rents, which have doubled without any government oversight or measures preventing property owners from raising them against us.”
He pointed out that “maintaining the stability of the market requires continuous monitoring and providing facilities for merchants to enter goods, in addition to preventing the raising of rents in the market, as some property owners have begun to raise the value of the rent for one shop from one million or one and a half million dinars to two and a half million and three million and are threatening us with eviction if we do not do so.” We paid the amount they asked for.”
Al-Jumaili stated that “shop owners are forced to pay the rent required of them because there is no law that protects them or receives their complaints.”
