Today, Sunday, the Ministry of Trade revealed the reasons for the high prices of foodstuffs in the Iraqi market.
"The change in the exchange rate and the rise of the dollar has greatly affected the rise of all commodities and foodstuffs in the markets, without exception," said the ministry’s spokesman, Mohamed Hanoun, in a statement to the National News Center.
He added, "The Ministry of Trade has taken immediate action to limit the rise in food prices in the markets, after distributing four items of sugar, oil, rice and flour, with directing all foodstuff agents in the governorates to receive these materials and distribute them immediately to citizens in order to reduce the high prices in the markets."
And he continued, "We face a big challenge in the Ministry of Trade regarding equipping the ration card items for citizens due to the lack of financial allocations and government red tape with regard to contracts with equipped companies."
He revealed "the sums of money allocated for the year 2021 so far, amounting to only 33 million dollars, which are not sufficient to buy oil."
He pointed out that "the allocations of the Ministry of Trade for the years 2011-2014 amounted to 6 billion dollars, while the financial allocation for 2021 reached 575 million dollars."
