Foreign workers in Iraq, whether they entered the country through official ports and with government licenses or through smuggling from the Kurdistan region to the rest of the provinces, have become another challenge to the country's economy due to their depletion of hard currency.
Despite Iraq’s efforts to regulate the situation of foreign workers, informed sources revealed that foreign workers transfer approximately $11 billion annually from Iraq to abroad.”
Bangladeshis occupy the throne of foreign workers in Iraq, with their numbers reaching tens of thousands, at a time when the unemployment rate in the country exceeds 15 percent, in addition to a major recession and scarcity of job opportunities in the private sector.
The sources stated, “The flow of foreign workers into the country is still continuing, as approximately 11 billion dollars are transferred annually from Iraq to abroad, as financial transfers to foreign workers.”
She added that “granting owners of Arab nationalities the right to reside and work in the country without restrictions has facilitated the entry of foreign workers into the country,” according to Al-Alam Al-Jadeed newspaper.
A security source reported yesterday, Tuesday, that a force from the Bab al-Sheikh Police Department and its affiliated stations launched a security campaign, along with the Tactical Regiment and patrols of the Canadian Najda Sector and the intelligence detachments, of the division’s responsibility within District 505 and District 143, located in the Al-Zalal Street area, which resulted in the arrest of 58 violators. , indicating, “27 of the violators hold Pakistani nationality, 20 are of Bangladeshi nationality, and 8 Syrians, in addition to a Palestinian violator, another Iranian, and an Iraqi carrying a Kalashnikov weapon.”
The Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Ahmed Al-Asadi, revealed, on April 3, during his meeting with the Bangladeshi ambassador to Iraq, Amdi Fadlul Bari, that the Council of Ministers’ decision to prevent the entry of Bangladeshi workers does not target Bengali citizens, but there is an increase of tens of thousands of workers despite the decision, especially non-citizens. Legitimacy, indicating that the Ministry had previously announced a mechanism to correct the situation of Arab and foreign workers for a period of 45 days and also extended it, but the recorded numbers are not proportionate to the real numbers present in the country.
The researcher in economic affairs, Ali Karim Idhib, warned, in a previous report, of “the volume of financial transfers of foreign workers in US dollars outside Iraq,” indicating that foreign labor is a healthy phenomenon for the economy, but when it is outside the controls, this is considered a drain on hard currency since there are more than a million workers. Foreigners in Iraq, and approximately 80 percent of them entered the Iraqi labor market illegally.”
According to the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, one million foreign workers work in Iraq, of whom only 71,000 workers are registered with official papers, as the registered official companies transfer money outside Iraq worth $600 million annually, and according to the Parliamentary Labor Committee, the official figures that it reviewed by monitoring the transfers Financial support for foreign workers amounts to more than 350 million dollars per month, which is equivalent to 4 billion and 200 million dollars annually.
However, according to unofficial estimates, the funds leaving Iraq as financial transfers to foreign workers are estimated at more than 8 billion dollars annually, in addition to the high salaries that most foreign workers in oil companies and other companies operating in Iraq receive without justification, according to official statements.
BNN previously revealed on June 12, 2023, that global data showed that Iraq recorded the highest unemployment rate in the Arab world, and third in the world, and according to the data, the highest unemployment rates were in Africa, where Nigeria and South Africa ranked first with unemployment rates. It is 33.3 percent and 32.9 percent, respectively. Iraq had the third highest unemployment rate in the world and the highest rate in the Arab world, reaching 15.55 percent.
