Baghdad/Al-Masala Al-Hadath: The problem of “uncontrolled weapons” in Iraq is a major challenge that the country has been facing for a long time.
Despite the government's efforts to collect weapons and confine them to the state, the results were not tangible due to the complexities of the situation on the ground and the influence possessed by the tribes and armed groups.
The problem includes multiple aspects of armament, including weapons from clans, organized crime gangs, and armed groups.
Al-Sudani, the Iraqi Prime Minister, pledged to disarm the unruly weapons and confine them to the state, and in his government programme, he announced the intention to confine light, medium, and heavy weapons to the state.
Since the American invasion of Iraq in 2003, manifestations of arms chaos have appeared, which has complicated the situation and dispersion of weapons in the hands of various groups.

The challenge lies in achieving this goal from the tribes and armed groups that refuse to lay down their arms.
However, confining weapons to the state is considered a popular demand, which requires activating the applicable laws and following up on their implementation to address this ongoing problem.
Manifestations of armament are spread throughout Iraq, in the center, south, and west, by armed groups, clans, individuals, and parties.

A security source confirms, in this regard, that “the campaign did not receive the response that was expected, especially since the majority of the weapons received by the ministry were for ordinary civilians, and most of them were light, ranging from a non-functioning or not good rifle to an old-style pistol.”
Arms dealers took advantage of the campaign, collected weapons waste on the black market and sold them to the state.
As part of ongoing efforts, the Ministry of Interior has allocated an amount of 15 billion Iraqi dinars (equivalent to 10.5 million US dollars) to purchase unlicensed weapons, whether light, medium or heavy. It also established a website, the “Ur” portal, to register these weapons, and provided about 700 weapons delivery centers in all governorates, except for the Kurdistan region.
The Iraqi National Security Council had formed, in accordance with Resolution No. 21 of 2021, what is known as the National Committee for Weapons Regulation and restricted it to the state.
There are estimates about the number of weapons in Iraq: about 4.2 million small arms in the hands of civilians or informal armed groups. However, security estimates indicate that this number may range between 7 to 10 million weapons.
