Interior Ministry: The plan to restrict escaped weapons extends until the end of 2024

The Ministry of the Interior stated that its strategy and plan that it developed to restrict illicit weapons through procedures for purchasing from citizens will continue until the end of the current year 2024, and that after that the “black market” will be dealt with in other ways according to the law, while security experts criticized the ministry’s procedures and confirmed that they caused an increase in weapon prices. , calling for tougher penalties for possession and trafficking in unlicensed weapons to serve as a real deterrent.
The spokesman for the Ministry of the Interior and the Security Media Cell, Brigadier General Miqdad Miri, said in an exclusive interview with “Al-Sabah”: “The strategy of restricting the escaped weapons by the Ministry of the Interior will continue until the end of the current year on 12/31/2024 as a time limit, and then we will move to the stages.” Others," and he stated, "A committee has been formed and the purchase prices have been determined and all that remains is to approve them, and the ministry is serious about implementing the government program."
Regarding the rise in weapon prices on the “black market” as a result of the decisions issued by the Ministry of Interior at the end of the last quarter of 2023 to allocate an amount of one billion dinars to each governorate to purchase weapons, Brigadier General Merry stressed that “the rise in weapon prices does not affect the ministry’s procedures in light of setting the price.” The time specified is according to technical principles that studied this issue, and thus the price was determined by us. In turn, the director of the Republican Center for Strategic Studies, Dr. Moataz Mohi Abdel Hamid, said in an interview with Al-Sabah: “The Iraqi government faces a real problem with regard to the issue of limiting the spread of weapons,” and noted that “the Iraqi government’s confirmation of the huge numbers of The process of uncovering arms and ammunition hoards, on the one hand, and the increase in the number of weapon owners, on the other hand, clearly demonstrate the abject failure of government forces to disarm and their failure to carry out educational and awareness campaigns to warn against their possession.”
He pointed out that "Iraq has become, at the regional level, a gateway and a major corridor for arms smuggling to Turkey, Iran and the Arab region.
