The Prime Minister's Media Office stated in a statement received by Sumaria News that the Prime Minister attended, today, Sunday, the central celebration held by the Iraqi Journalists Syndicate on the occasion of the 155th Iraqi Press Day.
During a speech he delivered, Al-Sudani welcomed the Iraqi and Arab press attendees, congratulated the anniversary of the founding of the Iraqi press, and praised its role and active and essential presence throughout important historical stages, through archiving incidents and events, in addition to its role in spreading a state of national awareness among Iraqis in difficult times.
He recalled the martyrs of the Iraqi press, who were executed by the dictatorial regime, or who were martyred due to terrorism and during the liberation battles against the terrorist ISIS gangs. He also recalled the martyrs of the press in the resistant Gaza, whose sacrifices exposed the brutal aggression and revealed its massacres against our steadfast Palestinian people, according to the statement.
The Prime Minister indicated the government's keenness to provide decent living conditions for journalists, stressing that he had directed two weeks ago to allocate a plot of land to establish a vertical residential complex for the Journalists Syndicate, within the land of the Baghdad Jewel residential project, in the Al-Zanbaraniya area in the Rashid district, south of the capital. He also pointed out the Cabinet's approval of the draft law on the right to access information.
He added that the Iraqi press contributed to spreading culture, and its pages hosted important cultural debates that influenced the Arab cultural structure. The most important influence of the press is represented by its role in the political situations and events that Iraq's history has witnessed, noting that the press has proven to be closer to people's concerns and a decisive and influential factor in raising public awareness against attempts to domesticate it or seize its freedom and thinking.
He mentioned that the dictatorial regime executed, disappeared and arrested many journalists, and many of them were forced to emigrate. With Iraq's liberation from dictatorship, our press became a fundamental contributor to building a free, pluralistic Iraq in which everyone enjoys freedom, dignity and respect for human rights. He pointed out that the press has a role in defending the new Iraq and exposing terrorism, as well as its role during the major battles that our security forces fought against terrorism.
He added that since 2003 until today, the press has provided convoys of martyrs and wounded who sacrificed their lives for the sake of Iraq. Our government has also been keen to provide all the possibilities for success for the professional national press, believing in the value of journalistic work and its national role. The government has also worked to provide a safe environment that guarantees journalists the ability to perform their role without harassment or abuse.
He explained, “We have moved forward with determination to complete the requirements of the draft law on the right to access information, after it was voted on by the Council of Ministers, and today we are proud that there is no journalistic prisoner or prisoner of conscience.” He also pointed out that there are platforms that harm the professionalism of journalism, and work to poison the atmosphere and mislead public opinion, exploiting the space of freedom, and harming the free and responsible press, before harming the state and its institutions.
