Energy expert Dr. Duraid Abdullah confirmed on Tuesday that Iraq needs to transform and rely on solar energy to produce electricity, pointing out that there is a government proposal to operate about 500 government buildings with solar energy instead of electricity.
Abdullah said in a televised interview followed by "Al-Eqtisad News" that government use of electricity reached 17 percent of the national system's electrical energy production, which is equivalent to the consumption of commercial and industrial stores combined, and this is a large number compared to the consumption of neighboring countries to the country, indicating that there is a government proposal to convert and use solar energy in government buildings to reduce pressure on the national system and start with 500 buildings, including the government palace and the parliament building.
He added that there are ideas to build two factories to produce solar panels, and the government has also given the green light to produce 12 gigawatts by using alternative energy and building some systems for government buildings and separating them from the main electricity grid, which will reduce the load, especially in the summer, on the local network, and thus increase the provision of electricity to the citizen and reduce its interruption.
