The Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs announced that tens of thousands of foreign workers in the country have applied to correct their legal status during the past three months, while it announced its intention, in coordination with the Ministry of Interior, to launch an intensive inspection campaign to arrest illegal workers and deport them from the country.
The ministry’s spokesman, Najm Al-Aqabi, explained to “Al-Sabah” that the official number of foreign workers registered with his ministry does not exceed 43,000, and a large portion of them do not renew their work permits granted by his ministry, which exposes them to legal problems, considering the numbers circulating about the number of illegal workers in the country to be exaggerated.
He stressed that the Ministry of Interior will continue to implement security campaigns in the places where these workers are located and take legal measures against them and deport them, revealing that the link to correct foreign workers, which it opened three times during this year, has received tens of thousands of requests to correct the legal status of these workers in the country.
Al-Aqabi noted that the Directorate of Residence Affairs at the Ministry of Interior has a major role in correcting the status of foreign workers through the joint committee between his ministry and the Ministry of Interior, which is tasked with adapting the status of those workers in accordance with the applicable law by adopting the single window system via the electronic link for the special form on the government platform (Aur), noting the need to oblige foreign workers to obtain certificates of experience certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He pointed out that the ministry will soon launch, in coordination with the Ministry of Interior, intensive inspection campaigns to control illegal foreign workers and deport them from the country, stressing the existence of clear evasion from them in addition to company owners, who will be subject to legal measures and large fines, considering correcting their legal status important to ensure that illegal workers do not leak into the labor market and compete with their local counterparts.
