    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Former Iraqi MP for the Christian component, Joseph Saliwa, considered today, Tuesday (November 19, 2024), the decision to ban the sale of alcoholic beverages in social clubs as opposing and restricting freedoms.
"There is no justification for banning the sale of alcoholic beverages in social clubs, especially since these clubs have been operating for hundreds of years and are officially licensed," Saliwa told Baghdad Today. "This decision opposes personal freedoms and harms Iraq's reputation before the international community, because it restricts freedoms and diversity within Iraqi society."
He added, "The sale of alcoholic beverages had large financial returns that brought the state millions of dollars annually, and the recent unjustified decision will cause the state to lose these financial returns, and will also push some parties that own weapons outside the state to exploit the issue in order to impose fees on those who sell beverages in a non-public manner."
On November 11, 2024, the Iraqi Ministry of Interior issued a directive to ban the manufacture and sale of alcoholic beverages in social clubs .
A letter issued by the Department of Non-Governmental Organizations in the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers, addressed to the “Al-Alawiya Club,” one of the most prominent social clubs in Baghdad, stated, “Referring to the letter of the Ministry of Interior numbered (13407) dated (11/11/2024, and the letter of the Tourism Authority numbered (1363) dated 10/10/2024 regarding informing our department of the ban on the manufacture and sale of alcoholic beverages of all kinds in the social clubs registered with us in accordance with the provisions of the Non-Governmental Organizations Law (No. 12) of (2010), otherwise legal measures will be taken .”
