Iraqi parliament resumes sessions on Monday with 'important' laws

Shafaq News/ A member of the Parliamentary Legal Committee, Aref Al-Hamami, confirmed on Saturday that the Presidency of the House of Representatives will call on the members of the Council to resume the sessions and hold a session on Monday or Tuesday of this week.
Al-Hamami told Shafak News Agency that the first or second session will witness voting on a number of important laws, including the Personal Status Law and the General Amnesty Law.
He added that "the Personal Status Law is ready for voting," noting that "the general amnesty law needs a simple amendment, after which it will be approved."
Al-Hamami pointed out that "the law to return properties to their owners contains a political dispute between the components, as the Sunni component categorically refuses to vote on this law in Parliament."
The Presidency of the Iraqi Council of Representatives decided to extend the legislative session for 30 days, starting from November 9, 2024, based on Article 58 of the Iraqi Constitution.
The extension aims to organize the work of Parliament and approve pending laws, especially after repeated postponements in the Council’s sessions. It will also give the government an additional opportunity to send the draft general budget law for 2025 before the end of this year, according to parliamentary law.
