NFL Week 7 Winners and Losers: Ajayi stuns; Rodgers falters

It is hard to believe it is already seven weeks into the NFL 2016 regular season and nearly to the halfway point. Each season seems to pass more quickly than the last. There was not a whole lot of middle ground this week as much separated the good from the bad. The teams that were good, were really good and those that performed poorly were really bad.
In this week’s battle of the inept, the Seahawks and Cardinals had only managed to score a combined six points by game’s end and saw each team’s kicker miss a chip shot field goal in overtime. With Ben Roethlisberger injured, Landry Jones filled in admirably but was not able to keep pace with Tom Brady and the Patriots. After back-to-back outbursts, Jay Ajayi found a place in the record books. The league’s last undefeated team was beaten and the winless Browns remain without a win. With all the ups and downs, week seven was loaded with winners and losers.
With every week in the NFL comes surprises, while some of them are exhilarating and encouraging, others only lead to disappointment and despair. With any game or contest there will always be a winner and a loser, and is just as true this week in the NFL as it is the next.

    Winners
    Jay Ajayi
For the second straight week, Ajayi leads off as the week’s biggest winner. On Sunday he rushed 28 times for 214 yards and a touchdown against the Buffalo Bills. Ajayi joins O.J. Simpson (twice), Earl Campbell and Ricky Williams as the only players to rush for 200 yards or more in consecutive games. He had 204 yards and two touchdowns on the ground last week against the Steelers. Ajayi will have to wait till week nine to see if he can be the first player in history to rush for at least 200 yards in three straight games.
    Aaron Rodgers
After weeks of mediocrity, Rodgers and the Packers’ offense came alive against the Chicago Bears last Thursday. For the first time this season Rodgers finally crossed the 300 yard threshold. Doing his best Tom Brady impersonation, he completed 39 of 56 passing attempts and threw for 326 yards and three touchdowns. The 39 completions were a Green Bay Packers’ franchise record for most completions in a game.
    The Cincinnati Bengals’ Offense.
With perhaps the most balanced attack of the week, the Bengals’ offense exploded on Sunday in a demolition of the Browns. Dalton threw for 308 yards and two touchdowns, with 169 of those yards and one touchdown going to A.J. Green. On the ground, Jeremy Hill lead the way with 168 yards and one touchdown, while Giovani Bernard contributed one of his own, along with another 80 yards rushing. In total, the Bengals’ offense put up 559 yards on their way to a 31-point effort.
    Honorable Mentions

The Eagles’ Defense and Special Teams, surprised the Vikings on Sunday. They feasted on Sam Bradford all day, forcing three turnovers and sacking him six times. Drew Brees had another MVP performance, throwing for 367 yards and three touchdowns. He remains one of the most productive quarterbacks in the league. Julio Jones continues to play at a level above everyone else and had his way with the Chargers’ secondary on Sunday. On a day when Matt Ryan didn’t have his best stuff, Jones still caught nine passes for 174 yards but was held out of the end zone. The San Diego Chargers have now won in back-to-back weeks, largely on the leg of Josh Lambo. He was perfect on the day as he connected on four field goal and three extra point attempts.
