Erbil (Kurdistan 24) - The German Foreign Ministry has contributed an additional 22 million euros to the UNDP-approved project for the restoration of stability of liberated areas, which funds fast-track initiatives in liberated areas of Iraq.
According to a statement by the UN mission in Iraq, the ministry's contribution rate rose to 80.2 million euros, and the total support from the German government to 209.9 million euros.
"The tremendous progress across the liberated areas of Iraq continues, with 70 per cent of those displaced during the conflict now returning to their homes," the statement quoted Acting UNDP Resident Representative Gerardo Noto as saying.
"This generous contribution will help restore public services and rebuild social cohesion in the most vulnerable areas," he said.
"Germany continues to support efforts to stabilize Iraq to consolidate progress so far," said German Ambassador to Iraq Cyril Nan.
"We look forward to the new government moving forward to take control of stability and further long-term development efforts."
In addition to its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Germany is also contributing to the project to restore stability to the liberated areas through the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, implemented by the German Development Bank.
At the request of Iraq, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) established a project to restore stability to the liberated areas in June 2015 to facilitate the return of displaced Iraqis, lay the foundations for reconstruction and recovery, and ensure that violence and extremism do not recur.
The restoration project includes more than 3,000 projects - half of which have already been completed - in the provinces of Nineveh, Anbar, Salahaddin, Diyala and Kirkuk.
The restoration project for the liberated areas rehabilitates basic public infrastructure such as electricity, water and sewage networks.
The project also includes the rebuilding of schools, health centers and homes, as well as providing short-term jobs for people through public works programs.
Iraq says the cost of rebuilding liberated cities is $ 100 billion.
