    The dollar stood near a two-month high on Tuesday as sentiment improved on expectations of progress in trade talks between Washington and Beijing and a tentative agreement to avert a US government shutdown.

    The dollar index, which tracks the performance of the greenback against a basket of major currencies, hit 96.986 points, after climbing to a high of 97.117 in mid-December.

    Poor European data hurt sentiment against the single currency, with the euro near a two-and-a-half month low of $ 1.1267 recorded in the previous session.

    US lawmakers on Monday reached an agreement on financing border security, which would help avoid another partial closure of the government.

    The dollar's bullishness halted on Wednesday as hopes of a US-China trade agreement boosted riskier currencies.
    The US currency rally continued for eight days and stopped on Tuesday to keep the dollar away from a two-month high.
    The trade dispute between the world's two largest economies has cast a shadow over world markets since mid-2018, and morale is bolstered by any sign of an impending breakthrough.
    US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that the deadline for reaching an agreement with China could be extended beyond March 1 if the two sides were close to reaching a full agreement.
    Officials from Washington and Beijing are holding a round of talks this week to seek an agreement. This, along with an agreement to avoid partial US government closures, led to higher equities and higher risk currencies.
    The dollar index was up 0.21 percent to 96.811, and the US currency rose by the same percentage against the euro to $ 1.1315.
    The Australian dollar, an indicator of high-risk global assets, rose 0.3 percent to $ 0.7120. The yen rose against the greenback to 110.72 yen.
