Former US Senator and former Vice Presidential candidate for the Democratic Party, Joe Lieberman, has died at the age of 82 after suffering complications as a result of a stumble in his home, according to his family.

His family said in a statement, "His beloved wife Hadassah and family members were with him when he passed away. Senator Lieberman's love for God, his family, and America continued throughout his life and in service for the common good."

Lieberman was the Democratic Party's nominee for vice president in the 2000 elections, which Republican George W. Bush won over Democrat El Gore.

He failed in his bid to obtain the Democratic presidential nomination in 2004, influenced by his support for the Iraq War.

According to a CNN report, Lieberman was a strong supporter of the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, which led to a long-term conflict, which many of his Democratic colleagues opposed.

Lieberman was elected to the Senate for the first time in 1988. He lost in the Democratic primary in 2006 but retained his seat by winning the general election as an independent candidate.

Lieberman endorsed Republican Senator John McCain for president in a speech at the Republican National Convention in 2008.
But he later endorsed Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential race, both from the Democratic Party.

Lieberman retired from the Senate in 2013 after four six-year terms.
