Hungary is implementing the Detention of All Asylum Seekers Act

BUDAPEST, March 28 (Reuters) - Hungary has announced it is ready to begin detaining asylum seekers in camps on its southern border with Serbia after it passed a law this month that has been criticized by rights groups and the United Nations.
On March 7, the Hungarian parliament approved the systematic detention of all asylum seekers in designated centers, consisting of freight containers that were transferred to places of detention.
As of Tuesday, asylum seekers entering Hungary, as well as those currently in the country, will be held in camps on the southern border of Hungary while their applications are being processed.
"Border protection services are fully prepared to enter into force on March 28," the Interior Ministry said in a statement.
"The police, the defense forces and the immigration and asylum office have made arrangements to implement the procedure," the statement said.
The ministry said the aim of the restrictions was "to prevent migrants without a clear status of free movement in the region, in the country and in the European Union, thereby reducing the security risk of migration."
According to the government, 324 freight containers have been installed after being converted into houses in separate locations called "transit zones" built inside a fence built by Hungary along the 175 km border in 2015.
Hungary, a member of the European Union, has regularly detained all asylum seekers in the past, but stopped the measure in 2013 as a result of pressure from Brussels, the European Refugee Agency and the European Court of Human Rights.
Human rights groups, including Amnesty International, condemned the new laws and said they ran counter to Hungary's international obligations on asylum seekers. [1]
