The US Central Command contradicts Trump on transsexuals

The commander of the US Central Command said there was no change in the Defense Ministry's policy on transgender soldiers after Donald Trump announced his plans to stop them from serving.

General Joseph Danford began his memo to senior commanders acknowledging ambiguity after President Trump announced his intention to prevent transsexuals from serving in the US military.

"There are no changes to the current policy until the Secretary of Defense receives the president's directions and orders implementation," Danford wrote. "We will treat all of our people with respect" . The memo did not include support or rejection of Trump's decision.

Trump announced the plans on Wednesday morning in a series of changes and said he would prevent transgender people from serving in the US military, a move that some have accepted in his conservative political support base, but which has caused great confusion among army personnel and reservists who are transgender Some say their numbers are in the thousands.

When he was a presidential candidate last year, Trump pledged to fight against gay men, women and transgender people. His decision sparked condemnation from rights groups and some lawmakers in both the Democratic and Republican parties as politically motivated discrimination.

The White House said Trump "had extensive discussions with his national security team" and that Defense Secretary Jim Matisse was informed of the move after the president took the decision on Tuesday.
