Washington is cooking a new crisis for Syria from the gate of tenderness

Arabic and International Sunday, 27 August 2017

The Syrian Democratic Forces, in cooperation with the Washington-led international coalition, are continuing to tighten their grip on Al-Raqqa, but there are many indications that new conflicts in Syria will follow the liberation of Al-Raqqa.

It is clear that the situation in al-Raqqa is very different from the situation in Mosul, which expelled government forces under the cover of the international coalition, the gunmen who were in a 10-month campaign that turned the city into rubble.

Significantly, the United States and its allies in Syria are being conducted without any official approval, but under considerable opposition from the Syrian government, which considers all coalition operations in the country illegal.

The United States is working in Al-Raqqa without paying any attention to the appeals of international human rights organizations, which have repeatedly raised the alarm over the massive civilian casualties in Al-Raqqa as a result of coalition air raids. There are also potential new conflicts in the country due to the nature of the campaign in the city.

First, it is obvious that the efforts of the Kurds, who represent the main military force of the "Syrian Democratic Forces", to annex the tenderness to their federation, will provoke fierce opposition by Turkey, which will not agree to the establishment of a large Kurdish enclave near its southern border.

It is noteworthy that the Turkish authorities regard the Kurdish People's Protection Units, the main force of the Syrian Democratic Forces, as well as its main political structure, the Democratic Unionist Party, as terrorist organizations supporting the PKK, Ankara has fought it for years.

The Turkish authorities have repeatedly expressed discontent with US cooperation with the Kurds in Syria, who are Washington's biggest ally on the ground in the fight against "Daash," but the US authorities did not listen to the calls of Ankara, satisfied with promises not to give heavy weapons to the Kurdish units.

On the internal level, the current liberation campaign in Riqqa may result in ethnic clashes in this Syrian city, which the Kurds seek to annex to their self-rule, although the majority of its population is Arab.

In April of 2017, the "Syrian Democratic Forces" formed the so-called "Al-Raqqa Al-Madani" Council, which is to administer the city after it was cleared of Da'ash militants.

At the same time works in the region, "Raqqa Governorate Council," which consists of local citizens and is counting on talks with the Russian side on the future of the city after its liberation.

"We hope to have contacts with the Russian side and to meet him in Turkey," Council spokesman Mohammad Hijazi said.

"It is necessary to have diversity (in the negotiations on the future of tenderness), the Russian side is very welcome by us in the tenderness," Hejazi said.
