Seoul: North Korean missile cut only half of range

South Korea's defense ministry said the medium-range ballistic missile, fired by North Korea last Tuesday, had halved its range.
Pyongyang fired the ballistic missile at a normal angle, but its range was half the distance, the ministry said in a report to the general meeting of the parliamentary defense committee.
These reports suggest that the range of the medium-range Huasong-12 ballistic missile ranges between 4,500 km and 5,000 km, but North Korea has fired it to half its range.
The ministry said the ballistic missile was flying about 2,700 kilometers across Japan.
The ministry said Pyongyang had fired 18 missiles or ballistic missiles through 13 tests during the year and that it had conducted seven ballistic missile tests since the start of the government of President Moon Jinn.
North Korea could commit a strategic provocation, such as launching another ballistic missile and conducting a nuclear test, in order to show improved capabilities of its nuclear warheads and means of transportation, the ministry said.
The Security Council condemned North Korea's firing of a missile over Japan on Tuesday, calling it a "heinous" threat. He called on Pyongyang to stop firing more missiles and abandoning its nuclear weapons and programs. sf
