The United Nations is planning to send some 250 Nepalese peacekeepers to Libya to protect its base there as part of a plan to return its operations to the country, UN envoy Ghassan Salameh told Libya.

"The dispatch of peacekeepers to that base in Tripoli means that by the first of October we will be able to carry out a large part of our work in Libya," said Salama, who has headed the international mission to Libya since June.

"We can deploy just over 250 peacekeepers in the coming weeks," he said.

"I am concerned about the situation in the refugee camps," he said. "I think these camps can become more humane and their daily lives must change radically."
