The policy of water use in Iraq focused on the establishment of infrastructure to provide water in quantities required for the development of agriculture, through the implementation of several dams, reservoirs and irrigation projects during the first half of the last century. However, these policies did not focus on methods and means that focus on rationalizing the use of water; Iraqi agriculture did not know the use of sprinkler irrigation and drip irrigation only in the late nineties of the twentieth century.
"The traditional irrigation, which is characterized by waste of water, is prevalent in agriculture, although this method negatively affects the production, as the irrigation of the water leads to the lack of proper water access to the plant," said academic economist Ahmed Omar al-Rawi. "He said.
"Agriculture must realize that the water component is the main axis for any future development of Iraqi agriculture," he said. "The need to adopt methods that contribute to the efficiency of water so as to enable the cultivation of arable land estimated at 22 million dunums."
"The water policy has tried to focus on water supply and attention to the total demand for water policy to achieve its required balance," he said. "The water supplied to Iraq was ample and needed to be organized, especially before Turkey and Syria set up their large reservoir projects on the Tigris and Euphrates rivers."

Al-Rawi said that the data indicate that the projects of the treasury organized the water process in Iraq by linking the Tigris and Euphrates through the channel Tharthar / Saqlawiyah, to supply Euphrates Tigris water stored in Lake Tharthar during the seasons of health, as well as generating electricity from the dams referred to in the table Which has a total generated power of 6931 watts / hour, if the storage has reached operational storage. "
He pointed out that this energy is one of the cheapest and best sources to generate in terms of safety of the environment, but it may not be achieved due to the lack of water stored during the years where the Tigris and Euphrates River, as happened in recent years.

Hisham pointed to "the interest of the agricultural policy in Iraq in the establishment of several irrigation projects, which total more than 35 projects, including the President of the irrigation of the northern island, which takes its water from the lake of the Mosul Dam and the estimated area of about 3 million acres, Kirkuk and Salah al-Din until the province of Diyala, and an area of 764 thousand acres. "
He added: "These projects can be divided according to the rivers, which are the irrigation projects on the Euphrates River, estimated at about 16 projects, with 131 subdivisions to cover an area of 84, 4 million dunums, and irrigation projects that depend on the Tigris, Of which 16 are random tables, and these tables are

Hisham concluded by pointing out that "irrigation projects that depend on the water of Diyala is estimated at 4 projects that irrigate about 15, 1 million dunums of cultivated land annually and projects that rely on the water of the Great Zab River, and the number of projects on the river in the region of 4 projects of about 3, 1 million acres[/rtl]
