The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General on sexual violence in conflict, Pramila Patten, expressed her concern over the adoption of an amendment to the Personal Status Law in Iraq, calling for a revision of this amendment.

"On September 23, 2016, the Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari signed with the United Nations a joint statement officially committed to prevent and respond to sexual violence related to conflicts in the wake of the crimes of sexual violence that have shocked the conscience of the world," Patten said in a press statement. One of the main pillars of the joint statement is to support legislative and political reforms to strengthen protection and response to crimes of sexual violence. "

"The UN office has received assurances from Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and House Speaker Salim al-Jubouri that the achievement of the pillars of the joint statement is necessary to rebuild Iraq after an appeal."

"Boys and girls in Iraq, who are already victims of serious abuses resulting from years of conflict, are now at risk of being deprived of their childhood. The Iraqi government must take all necessary measures to protect every child by preventing the adoption of policies that can harm children," Patten said. "He said.

She urged the UN official at the end of her statement, the Iraqi government to reconsider the proposed amendments to the Personal Status Law.

The Iraqi parliament earlier agreed, in principle, to the draft amendment to the Personal Status Law, allowing the marriage of girls as young as nine years.
