MP Hussein Al-Saabari confirmed today, Saturday, that amending the Personal Status Law has become a popular demand, while he pointed out that the amendment represents the majority of citizens.
Al-Saabari said in a statement, “The draft law guarantees all Iraqis, regardless of their beliefs, religions, or sects, the right to choose the legal provisions regulating their personal status,” noting that “the constitutional basis for amending the law stipulates that Iraq is multi-religious and multi-sect.”
He added that "the constitution gave the Iraqis the freedom to deal with the personal status law according to religious affiliations," explaining that "the constitutional texts oblige the government and parliament to make this amendment."
He explained that "there is no loophole for anyone who objects to amending the law, and insulting other sects or religions is a crime punishable by law."
The House of Representatives announced its agenda for next Monday's session, which included 6 paragraphs, most notably amending the Personal Status Law. End 25 min
