Women's parliamentary group rejects amending the personal status law

A number of female members of the House of Representatives from different political blocs formed a women’s group refusing to pass the amendment to the Personal Status Law in its current form.
The head of the New Generation parliamentary bloc, Sarwa Abdul Wahid, explained in an interview with “Al-Sabah” that “a group of female members of the House of Representatives formed a women’s group to reject these amendments, and we will meet with a number of political leaders to explain
the articles they object to.”
She added that “the objection to passing the amendment to the Personal Status Law is based on the reality of Iraqi society, which rejects these amendments, which in their current form are unacceptable to civil society organizations and many representatives, and that is why we collected more than 120 signatures against passing the first reading of the amendment to the law.”
For her part, member of the Watan parliamentary bloc, Nour Nafi’, confirmed to “Al-Sabah” that “the parliamentary group consists of a number of female members of the House of Representatives. The goal of the parliamentary women’s group is to reject the amendment to Personal Status Law No. 188. The group has prepared a schedule for action on the political forces that could influence our objection from outside the House of Representatives and its goal.”
