    [ltr]Follow up of Mawazine News[/ltr]
[ltr]WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US President Donald Trump has threatened to halt financial aid to countries voting for a UN resolution calling for a withdrawal of Washington's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.[/ltr]
[ltr]"They are taking hundreds of millions of dollars and maybe billions of dollars and then voting against us, well, we will watch this vote, let them vote against us, we will save a lot and we will not be concerned," Trump told reporters at the White House.[/ltr]
[ltr]The UN General Assembly, composed of 193 countries, holds a rare emergency session on Thursday at the request of Arab and Muslim countries to vote on the draft resolution, which the United States vetoed in the 15-nation Security Council on Monday.[/ltr]
[ltr]The other 14 council members voted in favor of the draft resolution submitted by Egypt, which neither mentioned Washington nor Trump by name but expressed "deep regret over the recent decisions concerning the status of Jerusalem."[/ltr]
[ltr]In a letter to dozens of UN member states on Tuesday, US Ambassador to the United Nations Nicky Healy warned that Trump had asked her to inform him of "countries voting against" the United States.[/ltr]
[ltr]"The United States will register the names," the ambassador repeated in a tweet.[/ltr]
[ltr]A number of senior diplomats said Halley's warning was unlikely to change the positions of many countries in the General Assembly where such direct public threats are rare.[/ltr]
[ltr]Figures from the US Agency for International Development show that in 2016 the United States provided economic and military assistance worth about $ 13 billion to countries in sub-Saharan Africa and $ 1.6 billion to countries in East Asia and the Oceania.[/ltr]
[ltr]Washington provided about $ 13 billion to countries in the Middle East and North Africa and $ 6.7 billion to countries in South and Central Asia.[/ltr]
[ltr]Miroslav Lajcak, president of the General Assembly, declined to comment on Trump's comments but said: "It is the right and responsibility of Member States to express their views."[/ltr]
[ltr]A spokesman for the organization's secretary-general, Antonio Gutierrez, also declined to comment on Trump's comments on Wednesday.[/ltr]
[ltr]"I like the letter Nicky sent Tuesday at the United Nations to all those countries that take us money and then vote against us in the Security Council or are likely to vote against us in the General Assembly," Trump said.[/ltr]
