The Canadian government has extended its military mission in Iraq until March 2019, the Canadian newspaper Ottawa Citizen reported. The mystery of the future role of its troops in the country remains unclear.
"Canadian Defense Minister Hargit Sagan will travel to Rome and Brussels from February 13 to 15 to participate in the meeting of defense ministers of the International Alliance and the NATO meeting," the newspaper said in a report.
"The defense secretary's visit comes at a time when the liberal government has not yet decided what to do next for the Canadian soldiers involved in Iraq, while the training of the Peshmerga's Canadian Special Forces is still pending," she said.
Sagan said he hoped to get a better idea of the future direction of Canada's mission in Iraq even after the United States and Iraq declared defeat of the terrorist group in the country, while the Canadian government announced the extension of its mission in Iraq at least until March 2019.
