The Indian government plans to import about 5.5 million metric tons of crude oil from Iraq out of a total quantity of 14 million metric tons it intends to import during the fiscal year beginning from April 2018 to 2019 for its refineries.

"11 million metric tons will be imported on conditional terms, while another 3 million metric tons of crude oil will be secured by direct sales from the site," said an official at Hindustan Petroleum Corp (HPCL).

He explained: "The Middle East crude oil grades with high sulfur levels, including Iraqi oil, constitute almost 86% of the share of the import of the company," noting that "the other imports are oil varieties with low sulfur rates."
