    This week, the Ministry of Commerce will conclude contracts with Australian and American companies to import quantities of up to 1.5 million tons of wheat, as part of its plans to fill the shortfall in this crop after reducing its cultivation plans due to water scarcity.
    The volume of Iraq's production of wheat during the winter season of 2021 reached 4 million and 234 thousand tons, recording a 32 percent decrease from the production of the year 2020, which amounted to 6 million and 238 thousand tons, according to the Central Statistics Agency of the Ministry
    planning.
    Director of the General Company for Grain Trade, Muhammad Hanoun, said that the marketed quantities of farmers and farmers have reached one million and 700 thousand tons since the start of the wheat marketing season on the ninth of last April.
    He added that marketing is still going on in Erbil, Dohuk, Sulaymaniyah, Kirkuk and Nineveh, where the quantities received daily range between 5-7 thousand tons in each governorate, expecting that wheat production throughout the country during the current season will reach one million and 900 thousand tons.
    He added that these numbers were far from the ministry's expectations due to the reduction of the cultivated areas as a result of water scarcity, but all energies were mobilized to make the marketing season successful, and there was remarkable cooperation by farmers and farmers in order to deliver all their wheat quantities to marketing centers.
    Hanoun clarified that the ministry is ready, after approving the Food Security Law, to contract with solid sources to import wheat for the next four months of this year.
    He pointed out that the current week will witness a contract with Australia and America to import quantities of up to 1.5 million tons in order to reach the provision of three million and 500 thousand tons of wheat, sufficient to distribute 8 meals within the ration card, while the share of the remaining months of the year will be distributed from the strategic storage. .
