"The head of the mullahs' regime must be held accountable to Khamenei for destabilizing the security of the Gulf and prolonging the suffering of the Yemeni people," said US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

This came in a tweet published by the US Secretary of State, on his account in Twitter, on Thursday.

"Iran's support for the Houthis not only allows attacks on Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, but also risks increasing the enormous humanitarian crisis in Yemen (which has been waging a war for three years)," he said.

In a statement, Pompeo accused Iran of wasting its resources in its "adventures" in the Middle East and in its ambitions to expand its nuclear program.

Iran faces major economic challenges and problems because of US economic sanctions against its nuclear and missile program, high unemployment and the exchange rate.

On May 8, US President Donald Trump announced a withdrawal from an agreement restricting Iran's nuclear program for peaceful uses in return for lifting Western sanctions.
