Erbil (Kurdistan 24) - Most of the southern provinces of Iraq decided to disrupt the official working day on Thursday to celebrate al-Ghadeer Day, a Shiite religious event celebrated on the 18th of Dhu al-Hijjah every Hijri year.
Shiites believe that the Prophet Mohammed was installed on that day, his son-in-law Ali ibn Abi Talib, successor after the return of Muslims from the farewell treaty to Medina before 1386 years.
Hundreds of thousands of Shi'ites often flock to Shiite shrines, especially the shrine of Imam Ali in Najaf, to mark the anniversary that will reach the peak on Thursday night.
So far, it has been decided to disrupt the official working hours on Thursday in six predominantly Shiite provinces of Basra, Maysan, Karbala, Wasit and Muthanna, as well as Najaf, the center of the celebration.
The announcement of the holidays in separate statements published on the websites of the provincial councils where the Iraqi law allows it to declare local holidays.
It is expected that three other provinces will announce the disruption of the working hours of Dhi Qar, Diwaniyah and Babil.
Sweets, refreshments and crackers are often distributed as a sign of joy in the event that Shia Muslims consider the third anniversary of the Hijri year after Eid al-Fitr and Adha.
It is common for Iranian visitors to take part in the event, but the economic embargo on their country may prevent many of them from going to Iraq.
Iraqi security forces mobilized in the cities to protect the revelers, who, like other events, were the target of a pro-Iraqi organization in Iraq.
The organization is calling for a defeat in Iraq late last year, but it can still launch attacks inside cities and on highways in the country.
In a recent speech, the leader of the Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi called on his supporters to intensify their attacks in all countries, including Iraq. The militants are calling the Shiites "infidels".
