    Today, Wednesday (May 15, 2024), the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee confirmed that there are nine difficulties facing the approval of the “compulsory conscription” law, indicating that “contracts are a successful alternative.” 
    Difficulties in passing the law 
    Committee member Representative Yasser Iskandar said in an interview with “Baghdad Today” that, “For years we have been pushing for the approval of a compulsory conscription law according to principles that suit the situation and allow young people to perform public service according to specific contexts that have a psychological impact on creating patriotic feelings and contributing to the service of science, not to mention Its roles are in refining their personalities in terms of taking responsibility and confronting abnormal ideas.”
    He added, "Nine points were behind the withdrawal of the compulsory conscription law from the House of Representatives and its return to the government, related to the time period and logistical, organizational, and administrative procedures," pointing out that "the general situation will not proceed with its approval without addressing and resolving some important points."
    Successful alternative
    The member of parliamentary security and defense points out, “The contract mechanism, which was implemented last year, was a very successful experience and may be an alternative to compulsory conscription, especially with plans to expand the circle of those accepted and determine the age ceiling, with emphasis on the principle of specifying contracts.”
    On (April 17, 2024), a member of the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee, Representative Waad Al-Quddu, confirmed that the experience with security contracts has been successful so far, indicating that it is very likely that they will be transformed into an alternative to “mandatory .  ”
    Al-Qaddu said in an interview with "Baghdad Today", "Adopting the principle of security contracts to reinfuse young blood into the security institutions and formations of the Interior Ministry has proven successful, especially with the characteristic of training and good selection, which gave greater activity in carrying out duties .  "
    He added, "The contract experience being transformed into an alternative to the compulsory conscription law is very likely, especially since the law includes many problematic clauses that have not been agreed upon. Therefore, contracts have become the most appropriate for the situation in terms of including those who wish to belong to the security establishment according to specific time frames .  "
    He pointed out "the importance of ensuring the rights of Iraqi minorities and components in fair proportions in security contracts because they are part of society and have responsibilities and duties, and their presence will enhance their capabilities."
