(Reuters) - Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said his government "will not risk the interests of the people" to please Iran, which is under economic sanctions imposed by the United States.
"We will not risk the interests of our people to please Iran or any other country," Abadi said during a meeting with journalists in Baghdad.
"It is not the right of any neighboring country to cut off the waters of the Karoon River from the Shatt al-Arab and we will talk to them about it."
Abadi said his government was only committed not to deal with the dollar with Iran and not with all recent US sanctions, days after he said Baghdad was not sympathetic to US sanctions against Iran, but would stick to protecting its people. Which has been widely criticized.
The Trump administration has threatened countries that deal economically with Iran with sanctions.
It is noteworthy that Iraq is the second largest importer of Iranian products in isolation from fuel, and the total imported last year about six billion dollars, and the Iraqi provinces adjacent to Iran - to a large extent - to Iran to provide electricity.
