A political scientist predicted that 2019 would be very turbulent in [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]unless substantial progress was made in tackling the problems that sparked the summer protests last year.
"Regardless of what the security aspect is and what has been achieved, Iraqis are looking to see reforms and progress in their daily lives by providing proper services and administration, social justice and improving economic conditions," said Fanar Haddad, a research fellow at the Middle East Institute at the University of Singapore.
"There was a wave of protests in the summer of 2018. As the temperature reached its highest, the demonstrators went out to the streets, expressing their anger over corruption and lack of services, including frequent power outages and lack of safe drinking water," Haddad said.
