[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] said in a press statement that "the decision to include the Iranian Revolutionary Guards on the list of terrorism by the US administration is related to the two states," stressing that "Iraq distanced himself from aligning with any party against another."
He added that "it is in the interest of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] stand in one distance with all these differences with existing countries without a line-up or the bloc to take into account the interest of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] economic, security and logistical."
The MP revealed that "the Speaker of the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] in his recent visit asked the US administration to exclude [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] from the sanctions to import Iranian gas and electricity, estimated at (7000) megawatts.
He explained that "Iraq imports gas from Iran to operate its electric plants, which produce up to (4000) megawatts, while importing electrical power up to (3000) makia watt."
Al-Halbusi said that " [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] production of electricity is estimated at about 14 thousand megawatts, half of it from Iran," noting that "in the event of compliance with sanctions, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] will lose half of its electricity, which imports from Iran."
He continued that "the Speaker of the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] asked the US side for a specific period to exclude the import of electricity from Iran ends with the end of the summer season," adding that "the US administration promised Mohammed [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] respond to his request in the coming days."
The MP pointed out that "the alternative to gas and Iranian energy will be the import of electricity and gas from Kuwait and Saudi Arabia in the coming months, according to the statement of the Prime Minister of the last," pointing out that "using Kuwait and Saudi Arabia will end the problem of energy, which is one of the thorny and complex problems plaguing Iraq.
Iraq's Foreign Minister, Mohammad al-Hakim, refused earlier to bow to US sanctions against Iran. "Let's examine the American statement on the Iranian Revolutionary Guards' listing on the terrorism list to take the appropriate position."
On Wednesday, March 20, 2019, the United States announced that [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] continue to be exempted from US sanctions against Iran and continued to buy Iranian electricity for another 90 days.
The US exemption aims to help [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] cover the electricity deficit, which means that Baghdad will continue to be exempted from US sanctions on the Iranian energy sector in particular.
The first exemption Washington granted to Iraq in December ended on Tuesday.
The extension of the US exemption to Iraq comes despite the US campaign against Iran, which is accused by the administration of US President Donald Trump to be behind most of the problems in the Middle East.
"We continue to discuss Iran's sanctions with our partners in Iraq," the State Department said in a statement.
This comes at a time when Washington continues to cooperate with Baghdad to end its dependence on natural gas supplies and electricity from Iran and achieve energy independence.
Expanding the exploitation of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] natural gas resources and diversifying its energy sources will boost the Iraqi economy as well as encourage a "united, prosperous Iraq free from Iranian influence," the State Department said .
Iran is subject to a series of severe sanctions imposed by the United States in the framework of a strategy adopted by US President Donald Trump towards Tehran, after announcing his country's withdrawal from the nuclear agreement between Iran and the West in 2015.
