The Trump administration is considering giving Secretary of State Mike Pompeo responsibility for the National Security Council as well as his successor, the hawkish John Bolton, US media reported.
CNN said the administration was considering taking the move, which would make it historically the second person to take up these tasks after former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.
This comes after President Bush's shortlist for a new national security adviser included conservative, trusted figures with close ties to senior administration officials, including Keith Kellogg, foreign policy adviser to Vice President Mike Pence.
In addition to retired General Kellogg, the list also includes Brian Hawk, the State Department's envoy to Iran, and Rick Waddell, a former deputy to the White House's national security adviser.
Bolton's successor
Republican Senator Lindsay Graham, who has Trump's confidence in Fox News's "Special Report" program, said those are the names that the president talked to me about.
People inside and outside the White House say that after John Bolton's 17 months in office, Trump wants to pick someone he can work with easily.
Trump and Bolton disagreed on a number of foreign policy issues, from Iran to North Korea to Afghanistan.
Trump said he was also considering his presidential envoy for hostage affairs, Robert O'Brien, who has a long history in Republican foreign policy, sources familiar with the discussions said.
Trump, speaking to reporters at the White House on Wednesday, said he was thinking of five people: "I think they are well qualified. Good people I've known over the past three years."
He said he would make a declaration about the person he wants to take up next week. The post does not need Senate confirmation
