Czech Republic Defense Minister Lubomir Metnar said on Saturday that his troops would no longer protect Bagram air base in Afghanistan after the current deployment expires in March 2020.
Moscow - Sputnik. “The Czech army has been protecting the Bagram base with partners from other countries for more than six years,” the minister said after visiting the base on Friday and Saturday. Czech military efforts in Afghanistan will now focus on training special forces and providing medical assistance, with a team of military surgeons sent to the country in early 2020.
The defense minister noted that there are more than 250 personnel in Afghanistan, including 170 officials responsible for defense duties, including guarding al Qaeda, and there are about 80 people involved in guarding the airport in Kabul, in addition to service in several provinces.
During his visit to Afghanistan, the minister met with Czech forces and laid a wreath at the memorial of citizens who died during the conflict in the country. North Atlantic.
