Media reports have revealed the deteriorating health of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, while social media users circulated a photo attributed to Japanese media of the dead Korean leader in a glass coffin.
The image posted on social media, and due to the lack of information that can be obtained about North Korea in general, and its senior officials in particular, has opened the door wide to fabricated or anonymous news, amid media jurisprudence to reveal what is happening.
The photo shows the North Korean leader lying in a glass coffin as if he were dead, covered in red, with comments confirming his death, but the picture proved to be untrue, much like a picture from the funeral of his father, the late leader Kim Jong Il, who died in late 2011 of a heart attack, opening the door for his son to take office.
The small details in the photograph, such as the angle of the capture, the pillow and the arrangement of flowers, indicate that the son's image is only a picture of the father's body after it has been modified.
A senior South Korean official said his country remained confident that there were "extraordinary developments" in North Korea, adding that rumors about Kim Jong Un's health were "untrue."
Unification Minister Kim Yoon-chul also said Seoul had "enough intelligence to say with confidence that there are no unusual developments" in North Korea, supporting speculation about Kim Jong Un's death.
Speculation about Kim's health began after he missed the birthday of his grandfather, North Korean founder Kim Il Sung, on April 15, when he had not missed this important event since he took office after his father's death.
As the absolute leader of a country with a nuclear weapons program, Kim's health is gaining considerable attention at the regional and global levels, and if something happens to Kim, experts believe it could lead to instability in North Korea.
The South Korean presidential office said earlier that it had information that Kim was residing outside Pyongyang and that there was no emergency preparedness order issued by the North Korean army or the ruling Workers' Party, which is supposed to happen if Kim is in a really bad condition.
