On Sunday, the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mustafa Al-Kazemi, affirmed his government's commitment to holding early elections on June 6, 2021, while he received members of the Independent High Electoral Commission, which is his second meeting with the Elections Commission in less than one month.
Al-Kazemi said, according to a statement issued by his media office, that the government is committed to the elections scheduled for June 6, 2021, and early elections “are the mission of our government, the people's demand and the October revolution.”
Al-Kazemi addressed the members of the Commission, saying that "what you need to hold the elections on time, ask them now, to be presented to the Council of Ministers at the nearest session, so that all your demands that lead to this historic mission of our government are approved."
The Iraqi Prime Minister stressed "the issuance of directives to all ministries and state institutions to overcome obstacles and bureaucratic procedures before the Electoral Commission," noting that "the voter registry is a major challenge, and work must be done around the clock to provide the requirements for the success of the elections."
More than 25 million Iraqis will participate in the upcoming elections, out of about 40 million people. What is striking in the elections is the participation of those born in early 2003, the year of the US occupation of the country, after they reached the age of 18 years.
Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi had set June 6 as the date for early elections. The Electoral Commission confirmed its readiness to hold early elections on the specified date, if five conditions are met, which are the completion of the election law, voting on the Federal Court law, the allocation of an electoral budget, and the Council of Ministers voting on the commission’s administrators, in addition to the United Nations and other international organizations providing assistance.
