The amount of cryptocurrency stolen globally via heists more than doubled in the first half of 2024, according to blockchain researchers at TRM Labs, driven by soaring cryptocurrency prices and a small number of large attacks.
According to some data, $1.38 billion worth of cryptocurrencies were stolen as of June 24, compared to $657 million during the same period in 2023.
The average theft was also one and a half times higher than the same period a year ago.
“While we have not seen any fundamental changes in the security of cryptocurrencies, we have found significant increases in the value of many currencies, from Bitcoin to Solana, when compared to last year,” the researchers added.
Therefore, TRM Labs researchers believe that crypto criminals now have a greater incentive to attack crypto services and can steal more.
Cryptocurrencies in general have recovered from the lows recorded at the end of 2022 after the collapse of Sam Bachman's FTX company, with Bitcoin jumping to an all-time high of $73,804 in March.
The theft of Japanese cryptocurrency exchange DMM Bitcoin was among the biggest incidents this year, with the value of the stolen coins amounting to about $308 million.
