The Lebanese Minister of Public Health, Hamad Hassan, and his Iraqi counterpart, Hassan Al-Tamimi, signed an agreement that includes oil in exchange for medical and hospital services.
During the signing, which took place yesterday evening, the Lebanese minister thanked the Iraqi people and their government for "the fraternal initiative to bring in a range of aid, from medical devices in support of the Ministry of Public Health and the Lebanese community in facing the Corona epidemic."
Hamad Hassan said: "Since receiving the Iraqi delegation on the 31st of last March, workshops have begun to implement an agreement that had been approved in September 2019 between the two countries regarding direct health cooperation between the Lebanese and Iraqi ministries of health."
He added, "The vision is bilateral integration in the provision of health services and their subsequent development, to include an additional item by including oil in exchange for medical, academic and training services."
The agreement includes: "Cooperation in the field of modern hospital management in the Republic of Iraq by Lebanese experts and specialized medical teams, and medical and health training through training programs determined according to need, as well as allowing Lebanese professors to practice education and training in Iraqi health and hospital institutions."
The agreement also includes cooperation in controlling the performance, quality and reliability standards in which Lebanon is distinguished, and which are carried out by the Ministry of Health, accompanied by the heads of directorates and departments in the Ministry of Public Health.
Last Thursday, the Iraqi Ministry of Health announced that it would send new medical aid to Lebanon to "overcome its health crisis," while Lebanese President Michel Aoun thanked the Iraqi government for its assistance.
During the past months, the Iraqi government sent medical aid, food and oil tankers to help the Lebanese government and its people.
Lebanon suffers from a stifling economic and financial crisis accompanied by a political and health crisis, especially after the collapse of the Lebanese pound against the US dollar.
