The Iraqi Foreign Ministry revealed on Thursday the size of Iraq's debt owed by the Republic of Cuba, from the era of the former regime led by Saddam Hussein until 2003.
"The Iraqi debts owed by Cuba, amounting to nearly 70 million dollars, were from the era of the former regime," Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmad Mahjoub said in a statement.
Mahjoub pointed out that Iraq demanded this amount from Cuba, and was asked after the visit of the new Cuban ambassador Alexis Bandrich Vega to the Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari to activate this file again.
"The Cubans have already offered us medical services for these debts," Mahjoub said of the offer made by Cuba in exchange for the debts. "Iraq's approval of this project is under consideration so far."
He added that the Cubans are ready to resolve the debt file with Iraq, and the subject is still under dialogue and talks between the parties.
The Iraqi Foreign Ministry said on Monday (April 2nd) that Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari called on the new ambassador of Cuba, Alexis Bandrich Vega, to cooperate in dealing with the file of Iraq's debts incurred by Cuba.
Al-Jaafari received a copy of Alexis Bandrich Vega, Cuba's new non-resident ambassador in Baghdad. He also called for the importance of scientific and cultural cooperation between Baghdad and Havana, the Cuban capital, and the signing of memorandums of understanding in various fields.
Al-Jaafari, Ambassador Vega, called on the Cuban Foreign Minister to visit Iraq, in the framework of strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries and ways to elevate them to achieve the aspirations of the two friendly peoples.
According to the statement, Jaafari told the ambassador that the government is moving to promote investment opportunities in Iraq, and that Cuban companies can benefit from them and contribute to reconstruction, pointing to the importance of scientific and cultural cooperation between Baghdad and Havana and signing memorandums of understanding in various fields.
Al-Jaafari called on the Cuban side to cooperate with Iraq in dealing with Iraq's debts owed to Cuba. Iraq is experiencing extraordinary circumstances due to the low oil prices and the cost of war against the terrorist "Da'ash" gangs.
The Iraqi Foreign Minister expressed his country's readiness to strengthen relations with Iraq in various political, economic, cultural and commercial fields, expressing his government's gratitude for Iraq's supporting positions in the United Nations, pointing to his country's readiness to meet the needs of Iraq.
